Balloon Safaris

Balloon Safaris

Balloon Safaris in Kenya’s Masai Mara National Reserve is the ultimate ballooning destination in East Africa. The landscape is stunning and free, and the abundant wildlife can make for spectacular viewings from above. As this is a wilderness area contiguous with the Serengeti National Park of Tanzania, with free-ranging wildlife that is not fenced in, we of course cannot guarantee what we will fly over and what we will see during a particular flight. However, we typically see a good diversity of animals, and it is likely you will spot elephants, giraffes, various antelope species, and ostriches from the balloon Safaris. Many of our guests also see hyenas, lions, and cheetahs, and ballooning is one of the best ways to search for the elusive black rhino, of which there are less than 40 in the Mara. Depending on the day’s flight path, you may also drift along one of the rivers and see hippos and crocodiles.

We have had some truly amazing sightings over the years in this incredible balloon Safaris, including leopards in trees, lions on kills, and active hyena dens. If you visit the Mara between July and October, you will probably see the “Great Migration” of over a million wildebeest, along with large numbers of zebras and gazelles. Observing this phenomenon from the balloon is the best way to grasp just how huge the migrating herds really are, and is an experience not to be missed. Regardless of whether the “Big Five” are seen from the balloon, most people say that the balloon flight was a highlight of their safari.

THE EXPERIENCE

You will be picked at your camp or lodge between 0400-0530AM and drive you to the launch site, to arrive by 0600AM. Depending on the weather conditions, you can enjoy a cup of coffee or tea while you watch the balloons being prepared for take-off. Your pilot will give a safety briefing as well as explain what you can expect during the flight. There are basic toilet facilities available at the launch site. NB: one launch site has toilet facilities.

The balloon crew will assist as you clamber into your balloon basket for take-off just before sunrise, at about 6:30AM. As you rise the Maasai Mara plains opens up before your eyes to feast on the golden sunrise, enchanting experiences, plains-game below as the winds gently blows the basket deeper into the reserve. The pilot is at hand pointing out at the wildlife below with plenty of photographic opportunities unfolding. Soar silently with 360 degrees of spectacular savannah lasting approximately one hour, depending on wind conditions.

Upon landing between 7:15 and 7:30 AM, observe the complete deflation of the balloon envelope as the vehicles wait for you for a short drive to your morning hearty meal.

The breakfast is set up on the picturesque savannah plains of the Mara, typically under the shade of a single balanite tree. Sit down to a full bush breakfast in the Kenyan style, complete with eggs-to-order, sausages, fresh juices, fruits, cereals and, of course, sparkling wine.

During breakfast, you can also peruse the photos your pilot has taken during the flight, and decide whether you would like to purchase the photos. The finale is balloon flight certificate signed by your pilot as a memoir.

After breakfast, enjoy a leisurely game drive back to your camp or lodge to arrive by around 10:30AM already reliving the memories of the morning’s flight. What an Exhilarating Balloon Safari.

Farm Tours in Kenya

Farm Tours in Kenya

Farm Tours in Kenya

There are several destinations where you can have farm tours in Kenya, below we have listed some of them.

Brown’s Cheese

Approximately a 30 minutes drive from Nairobi into the countryside of Limuru is Brown’s Cheese. A dairy farm that feels more like an idyllic vineyard when you pay a visit. The farm attracts visitors to see its picturesque pasture with roaming dairy cows and a cheese tasting room where guests can have their lunches. The tasting opens from Thursday through Saturday by appointment only but is well worth the effort as visitors will be treated with a three-course lunch, a tour of the cheese factory, a demonstration of milking cows, a tour of the bio dynamic vegetable garden and taking home a portion of freshly-made cheese from the premises. All cheeses are naturally made using no coloring, coatings or additives.

Kawamwaki Farm

Exploring an organic vegetable farm doesn’t always have to be on foot. At Kawamwaki Farm. You can do it on a horse’s back. This farm-slash-equestrian center is an ideal spot to explore the gorgeous farmland loaded with organic vegetables and flower fields in the Limuru countryside during a horse riding tour. For two hours, a skilled guide will lead the tour through the hilly terrain to see the magnificent sights of the plants in its peak season. In addition to horseback riding tours, guests can join an educational walking tour into the nearby wilderness to learn about its indigenous trees and their role in the ecosystem.

Sanctuary Farm

In Lake Naivasha, Sanctuary Farm is not your typical run-of-the-mill farm you’d find elsewhere. While there are dairy cows ready to be milked, you’ll also find them wandering the grounds alongside impala, wildebeest, zebras and giraffes. The farm was founded by Francis Erskine in the 1970s, who originally wanted to start up a horse farm for polo games. But that wasn’t enough for Erskine, who went on to start up a restaurant in the club house and collected game animals as part of the farm. Today, visitors can go on horse-back riding tours throughout the farm. The visit the barn to milk the cows, go on a scenic boat ride in its lake to see hippos and more. Or take your experience up a notch and camp overnight on the farm at one of its designated campsites. A small stable-turned-hotel on the premises has up to 10 rooms that can be rented for the night as well.

Olepangi Farm

Imagine walking up to this farm and feeling like you’ve stumbled upon a movie set. That is incredibly striking cottages surrounded by gardens. Olepangi Farm is a boutique resort with a working horse farm. It is situated in the foothills of Mount Kenya, the second largest mountain in all of Africa. There are only five rooms available per night, giving guests the feeling of having the whole place to themselves. Activities on the farm include horseback rides, outdoor yoga sessions, a series of lawn games like badminton, and an exclusive safari ride to see big game animals in their natural habitat. Stick around for delicious farm-to-table fare with Incredible Kenya Adventures, at the farm to wrap up your experience perfectly.

Gorilla Trekking Safaris

Gorilla Trekking Safaris

Gorilla Trekking Safaris, to ensure a superior experience with the mountain gorillas of Rwanda, guests are required to follow clearly defined protocols. Guests must be at least 15 years old and in excellent physical health. The health requirement is not only to meet the demands of the trek, but also to protect the gorillas from contracting flu, colds, or other infectious diseases that can be passed from humans to primates. Gorilla Trekking Safaris When in the presence of the gorillas, your guide will require you to stay at least seven meters (22 feet) from the family. This requirement ensures that the gorillas do not feel threatened and that any diseases they may carry are not passed to guests.

The Rwandan Development Board, which is responsible for managing the protection of the mountain gorillas, has a set limit of 80 permits per day for guests who wish to participate in treks to see the primates. We recommend that you plan well ahead, as this is the most popular activity among visitors to Rwanda and the permits go very quickly. If you want to include mountain gorilla trekking in your nature tour, your Incredible Kenya Adventures tour planner will arrange for the permit, the cost of which is included in your personal African safari package.

During your gorilla tour in Volcanoes National Park, we recommend that you wear long trousers, a long-sleeved shirt, waterproof jacket, and heavy-duty boots designed for traversing muddy, steep, and rugged terrain. You should also bring heavy gloves and a walking stick. Those who wish to hire a porter to help with camera equipment and offer a hand when you need extra support on the trails will want to bring some cash, as well. On the day of your trek, you will be assigned to a group of people who are of similar fitness levels and ages. Guests who are 45 or older are typically placed in a group that stays near the base of the mountains, while younger, more athletic guests are assigned to groups that take the more challenging hikes to higher elevations. Your group is assigned to one of the 10 gorilla families. If you are familiar with the mountain gorilla families in Volcanoes National Park, you can request a group that is planned for that particular family of primates. Before you begin your journey to see the gorillas, you are briefed on proper trekking and mountain gorilla etiquette to maximize your enjoyment of the experience. You should expect to return to base by early evening.
